Incident: Almaki arrested in Damascus, tortured in Syria

This month Abdullah Almalki is arrested in Damascus and subsequently detained at the "Palestine Branch", the same facility where another Canadian, Maher Arar, will be sent in five month's time.

In one year's time, Almalki will meet Arar in detention, who will describe him as being emaciated and weak from torture. In two year's time, Almalki will be acquitted (28 July 2004). He will be released quietly, and will refuse to talk to journalists until after a recovery. He will be reported to have sustained a broken foot, a damaged hip, and psychological trauma from exceedingly long periods of solitary confinement.
